Silhouettes at Rockpile
I used to color and value of the board as the middle color and value of the bluffs in the painting. By doing this I was able to quickly evaluate all of the other color and value decisions within the painting. Everything became a question of comparison to the unpainted part of the board.
As the painting progressed, the middle value area became replaced with similar values. Really the only decisions for this area was to what level of detail would the bluffs be painted and the warmth or coolness of the colors to be used.
At the end the adjustments were all about the relative differences in the foreground versus the background. As the level of detail in the distance fades so does the intensity of the color and the values. The intent is to create the feeling of distance within the painting.
