Fisherman's Cove

For my second painting of the day, I stopped by this vacant lot above Fisherman's cove.  There was a no trespassing sign posted but it did not stop the people from using the path down to the beach.  The view was amazing.  This is one of the smallest coves and is tucked away just north of Heisler Park.  After the long walk to the car, this location was perfect.  It was right across the street from where I was parked.  I dumped off the first painting, cracked open a cold drink from the cooler in the car, and walked across the street and set up to paint.

This was a difficult composition because of the way the hotel is perched upon the rocks.  My perspective is off as you can see the building sliding into the ocean.
Establishing the path with shadows running across it and the bushes in the foreground and creating the feel of the distance between it and the hotel was another challenge.
This was a very quick painting.  Even with the challenges presented by the composition, this painting moved very quickly.  As the sun set the rocks below the hotel really got fired up.  The kayaks and surfboards were the last to be added.  I liked the way the stairs down to the beach from the hotel turned out.
The lesson here was; there is no amount of correcting that will correct incorrect drawing.  The drawing must be correct before proceeding.
The days work.

You can see that the values do not separate the foreground from the rest of the painting.
