Sunset in the Palms

This color pencil drawing measures approx. 12-14" H x 22" W
The following detail shots are intended to show you my blending technique.  The set of pencils contained 72 colors.  Compared to my pastel work and oil work this is a very limited pallet.  In order to achieve the color and value I was looking for I had to change my approach.
The subtle transitions in color and value were achieved in layers.  I began with the colors representing the final intent.  This first layer was applied with very light pressure.  I had to preserve the tooth of the paper till the very end so that I could continue to layer in the color and value.
Many of the colors could only be created by color mixing on the surface itself.  There are probably no less than 18 specific colors combined in this 3" wide example.
There are no real options for correction with color pencil so it is essential to maintain a certain level of patience.  Working slowly from light to dark while preserving the lightest areas of the drawing so as to capture the value contrast.
The drawing of the palms was saved for last and placed on the layers of cloud to insure the correct color progression of the background.
This blending effect creates an almost pointillist finish to the drawing.

The value shot.  It feels like I got it right.  The clouds seem to be in the distance.  The atmospheric perspective feels right.
