This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This painting was done from my first night in Kapalua. I was looking east back into the interior of Maui.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The color of the hills and the clouds coming through the valley were my inspiration.

Nakalele Point

This pastel painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on velour paper. The crashing waves and the constant blowing of the trade winds were the perfect compliment to the reflections off of the waves and the highlights on the lava.

Laguna Salt Creek II

This pastel painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on velour paper. The blended, shimmering reflections were coming off of the wet sand as the water slid back into the ocean.

Goff Island III

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This stretch of beach would normally have hundreds of people on it. Winter thins things way out. Everything had a muted tone because of the lingering fog.

Laguna Salt Creek

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The day was semi-overcast with the sun peaking through from time to time. The reflections of the cliffs in the sand were interesting.

Boats at Twilight

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This painting is from Hilton Head. Evening was fast approaching as the sun was already below the tree line. The reflections in the water were shimmering.

Spanish Moss

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This tree is in the first graveyard on the island of Hilton Head.

Hilton Head Marsh III

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The contrast of the long purple shadows and the setting sun upon the marsh were my inspiration for this painting.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The stillness of the water and the muted tones of the vegetation and the sky gave the landscape a sense of tranquility.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The marsh areas are very interesting to me because of the shape and color contrasts of the subject. I also like the differences in the structural elements. The vertical trees and marsh grass versus the horizontal water.

Winter Mountain Twilight

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The faded purple shadows in the distant mountains were constantly changing in color.

Pheonix Mountain Vista

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". I am from southern California and I see lots of mountains. However, these are some of the first that have really been blue because of the distance. It seems like a lot of painters take advantage of the "atmospheric effect". Mountains a couple of blocks away appear blue...these mountains had to be at least 2 miles away.

Plateau In The Distance

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This scene was painted on my trip to Pheonix. The dynamic cast shadows on the mountain was my motivation for this piece.

Twilight Mountain Shadows

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". As the sun was fading the shadows on the mountains were ever changing. Their deep but faded quality were what I tried to capture.

Saguaro Outside of Pheonix

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". I was inspired during my trip through Arizona by the values of the landscape around me. The shadows and the mountains in the distance were a source of inspiration for me.

Desert Twilight

This pastel painting was done on velour paper and measrues 27.5"x19.75". As I was traveling back from Scottsdale to LA the sun was setting and casting these beautiful long shadows. I was taking as many pictures as I could while we were speeding down the 10 fwy.

Desert Reflections

Tree in Winter

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This is first in a series of trees I am doing. I was fascinated by the way the smooth gray bark captured the morning light.

Gentle Morning Shorebreak

Laguna Beach Morning

This pastel painting measures 25"x19" and is done on Sennelier La Carte pastel card. The main beach can be seen in the distance.

Kapalua Sunset

This pastel painting measures 25"x19" and it is done on Sennelier La Carte paper. Every sunset was a painting waiting to happen while I was there.

Laguna Noon

This pastel painting is done on Sennelier La Carte paper and measures 16"x25". The boulders and the shadows cast by them were what interested me in this landscape.

Lahaina Mountain View

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The mountains were shrouded in low hanging clouds. Eventhough my daughter was learning to surf, I couldn't stop myself from taking pictures of these mountains.

Eucalyptus Morning Light I

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The sky had this electric quality about it that morning. Everything was "lit up". The colors were so vibrant I did a whole series of paintings based on that day.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This like many of my recent posts is from a field trip to some nearby oil wells. This wooded area is entirely comprised of eucalyptus trees. The light and shadow on the leaves and bark were amazing.

Hazy Laguna Cliffs

Eucalyptus Morning Path I

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This path runs through a wooded area populated entirely by eucalyptus trees. Off to the right side is an oil field.

Oil Field Bluffs

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". The values of the bluffs were what interested me in this subject.

Pepper Trees II

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This painting is done from a hike along an empty lake bed that has been changed into a huge horse trail.

Irises I

This painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on a sanded paper called Colorfast. The inspiration for this painting was a home down the street that had hundreds and hudreds of Irises growing in the front yard.

Fuschia

This pastel painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on velour paper. This Fuschia was found with many of my other floral subjects at a nursery in Newport Beach called Roger's Gardens.

Lake Arrowhead

This pastel painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on colorfast paper. Colorfast paper is a sanded paper-it is literally like sandpaper.

Corona Hills

This pastel painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on sanded paper. This is part of the Cleveland National Forest and is the view I would have from my home if it were not obscured by trees. The shadows in the hills is a constant source of interest to me.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". This is a painting from a series of paintings based on my preparation for a plein air contest in Yorba Linda.

Nasturtiums I

This painting is done on velour paper and measures 27.5"x19.75". These flowers were growing through this beat up picket fence in front of an old law office that was right next to my bank. I took about 50 pictures of them and this was the subject that looked the best out of them. This piece is SOLD and in the collection of Lisa Dreim.

Laguna Hills

This painting measures 27.5"x19.75" and is done on sanded paper. These hills are covered with California Live Oaks (species) that are threatened by an expansion of the road leading into Laguna.

This pastel painting is done on velour paper and measures 24.5"x19.75". The morning light was coming through the canyon as the fog started to lift.
